Information

The Georgia Dome is a domed stadium located in Atlanta, Georgia, between downtown to the east and Vine City to the west. It has been the home stadium for the Atlanta Falcons since 1992, and is owned and operated by the State of Georgia as part of the Georgia World Congress Center. Until 1999 upon the opening of the Millennium Dome in London, the Georgia Dome was the largest domed structure in the world.

The Dome is accessible by rail via MARTA’s East-West and Proctor Creek lines, which service the nearby Dome/GWCC/Philips Arena/CNN Center and Vine City stations.

Construction

The Georgia Dome was completed in 1992 at a cost of $214 million (US), which came from the Georgia General Assembly, making it one of the largest state-funded construction projects in state history. It seats 71,228 for football, and can hold approximately: 75,000 for concerts, 53,000 for basketball when the dome is fully open and 40,000 for basketball and gymnastics when the dome is sectioned off (one half closed off by a large curtain). The record for overall attendance at the Georgia Dome is 75,892 for the 2008 SEC Championship Game in football.

The structure is located on 9.19 acres (37,200 m²) of land; the dome has a height of 270.67 feet (82.5 m), a structure length of 744.75 feet (227 m), a structure width of 606.96 feet (185 m), and a total floor area of 102,149.51 ft² (9,490 m²). The dome is the largest cable-supported dome in the world. Its roof is made of teflon-coated fiberglass fabric (which is strong and lightweight) and has an area of 374,584.08 ft² (34,800 m²). From its completion until the December 31, 1999 opening of the 20-acre (81,000 m2) Millennium Dome in London, it was the largest domed structure of any type in the world, but still remains the largest indoor sporting facility in the United States.

River Plate Stadium

Information

The Estadio Monumental Antonio Vespucio Liberti, better known as El Monumental de Nuñez or River Plate Stadium, is a stadium in the Belgrano district of Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is the home venue of Club Atlético River Plate and is named after former club president Antonio Vespucio Liberti. El Monumental is considered to be the national stadium of Argentina.

History

The first match played in this stadium was on 25 May 1938 between River Plate and Peñarol from Uruguay. River won 3-1.

The stadium was renovated several times, most notably for the 1978 World Cup, when the missing stands of one side were erected to complete the circle around the field.

Events

The Monumental, aside from being where River Plate plays as host team, is also the stadium where the Argentine National Football Team usually plays as host, in events such as the FIFA World Cup qualification.

Rugby union matches featuring the Argentina national rugby union team, Los Pumas, also take place occasionally in this field, although the Pumas more frequently play at another Buenos Aires venue, Vélez Sársfield. In addition, when an international music superstar or band comes to the country, its concert is held in this stadium, as it is the biggest in the country. Iron Maiden, Bon Jovi, The Ramones, The Rolling Stones, Madonna, Luis Miguel, Robbie Williams, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Roger Waters, U2, Guns N’ Roses, Michael Jackson, Rod Stewart, Eric Clapton, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Slayer, Shakira, Aerosmith, The Police, Evanescence, Keane, Beck, Metallica, Kiss, Tina Turner, Franz Ferdinand, Peter Gabriel, Backstreet Boys, Bruce Springsteen, Ozzy Osbourne, Bob Dylan, AC/DC, Korn, Oasis, Black Sabbath, High School Musical have played here, among others. Local important bands such as Soda Stereo, Patricio Rey y sus Redonditos de Ricota or Serú Girán have also held their major shows at the Monumental as well. In 2007, Soda Stereo played 6 sold out shows at the stadium, having the call record of shows in a single tour.

Madonna performed 4 sold-out concerts in December 2008 as part of her Sticky & Sweet Tour: during one of these concerts, an official DVD of the tour was filmed. She holds the record for fastest sell out concert at the stadium for her first show, with 3 hours and more than 67,000 tickets sold.

San Siro

Information

The Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, more commonly called Stadio San Siro, is a football stadium in Milan, Italy. It is the home of A.C. Milan and F.C. Internazionale Milano. The stadium is named in honour of Giuseppe Meazza, the two-time World Cup winner (1934, 1938) who played both for Internazionale and Milan in the 1930s and 1940s.

History

The stadium construction started in 1925 in the Milanese district of San Siro, which gave its original name. The idea to build a stadium in the same district as the horse racing track, belongs to the man who then was the president of AC Milan, Piero Pirelli. The architects designed a stadium only for football (there is no athletics track in it). The inauguration was on September 19, 1926, when 35,000 spectators saw Internazionale defeat Milan 6-3. Originally, the ground was home and property of AC Milan. In 1947 Internazionale became tenants and the two have shared the ground ever since. Although Giuseppe Meazza played for both Inter and Milan, he enjoyed more success at Inter and is more favoured by the Inter faithful; as a result, Milan fans favour the term San Siro for the ground.

As well as being used by Milan and Inter, the Italian national side also plays occasional games there and it has also been used for the 2000–01, 1969–1970 and 1964–65 Champions League/European Cup finals. The stadium was also used for UEFA Cup finals when played over home and away legs but has never featured since the competition changed to a single final structure in 1997–98.

The stadium underwent further renovations for the 1990 World Cup with $60 million being spent, bringing the stadium up to UEFA 5-star standard. As part of the renovations, the stadium became all seated, with an extra tier being added to 3 sides of the stadium. This entailed the building of 11 concrete towers around the outside of the stadium. Four of these concrete towers located at the corner to support a new roof which has distinctive protruding red girders.

Both Milan and Inter are in the process of new stadium feasibility studies

Events

Other than football matches, the San Siro has been host to many pop music concerts. Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Vasco Rossi, Ligabue and The Rolling Stones,Laura Pausini have headlined at the stadium more than once. The San Siro was also the venue for the boxing match between Duilio Loi vs. Carlos Ortiz for the Junior Welterweight title in 1960.

Information

Docklands Stadium, also known by its sponsored name Etihad Stadium, is a multi-purpose sports and entertainment stadium in the Docklands precinct of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Originally built as a replacement for Waverley Park the stadium is primarily used for Australian Rules Football and is the headquarters of the Australian Football League who as part of the construction deal assume ownership of the ground in 2020. Also headquartered at the stadium is Seven Network’s digital broadcast centre.

The stadium has been host to other sporting events, including regular Association football matches (as home to the Melbourne Victory) as well as one-off matches for sports including cricket, rugby league and rugby union as well as several specialised events and concerts.

Since it was built there has been a significant amount of criticism directed toward the facility, particularly from its major tenant, the AFL who have frequently regarded the stadium owner as a hostile landlord.

History

The stadium was developed as a replacement for Waverley Park. Originally developed by Docklands Stadium Consortium and thereafter controlled by Seven Network the remaining leasehold interest in the stadium, on 21 June 2006, was sold to James Fielding Funds Management for AU$330 million. In 2025 the AFL is expected to take over the ownership.

Like Waverley it was built for Australian Rules Football, unlike most grounds of a similar size in Australia which were originally designed for cricket. It is used as a home ground by the AFL clubs Carlton, Essendon, North Melbourne, St Kilda and the Western Bulldogs.

Events

Events that have been held at Docklands include concerts by (Robbie Williams, Kiss, Barbara Streisand, Bruce Springsteen, Green Day and U2). Other events include wrestling (World Wrestling Entertainment Global Warning, 2002) and boxing (Kostya Tszyu vs Jesse James Leilya, 2003). Docklands Stadium is the only stadium in the world that has hosted One Day International cricket indoors as it is the only fully enclosed stadium in any major cricket playing country with a playing surface large enough to accommodate a conventional cricket match.

The ground hosted two quarter finals of the 2003 Rugby World Cup and the Rugby 7s at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. The stadium was also used in the 2008 Rugby League World Cup for the Australia vs England game and is expected to be included in an Australian bid to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup. In the summer months it is used as the home ground for Melbourne Victory games in the A-League and the AFC Champions League.

Estádio do Morumbi

estadio-do-morumbi-1

Information

Estádio Cícero Pompeu de Toledo is a stadium in São Paulo, Brazil, popularly known as Estádio do Morumbi, or just Morumbi, because of its location in the city’s Morumbi neighborhood. It is the home ground of São Paulo Futebol Clube and its formal name honors Cícero Pompeu de Toledo, who was São Paulo FC’s chairman during most of the stadium construction, and died before its inauguration. The stadium was designed by the architect João Batista Vilanova Artigas.

Morumbi once held 120,000 seats, but now its maximum capacity is only 80,000 seats, and only 75,000 tickets are sold each game for safety reasons. The playing field measures 108.25 metres (118.38 yd) x 72.70 metres (79.51 yd).

History

In 1952, São Paulo’s chairman Cícero Pompeu de Toledo requested the city’s mayor Armando de Arruda Pereira a groundplot in the Ibirapuera neighborhood. However, the mayor refused the request, but donated a groundplot in the Morumbi neighborhood to São Paulo.

On August 15, 1952, the stadium construction started. Only eight years later, in 1960, the construction was partially concluded, and the stadium was inaugurated with a maximum capacity of 70,000 people.

The inaugural match was played on October 2, 1960, when São Paulo beat Sporting Lisbon of Portugal 1-0. The first goal of the stadium was scored by São Paulo’s Peixinho.

On March 2, 1969, shortly after the end of the São Paulo-Corinthians 2-4 match, a thunderbolt discharged close to the stadium, starting a tumult in the stadium exit doors. Because of the tumult, one of the walls collapsed, and a 40-year old Corinthians supporter named João Benedetti died.

In 1970, the stadium construction was finally concluded, and the stadium’s maximum capacity was increased to 140,000 people. The re-inaugural match between São Paulo and FC Porto drew 1-1.

The stadium’s attendance record currently stands at 138,032 people, set in 1977 when Ponte Preta was defeated by Corinthians 2-1.

In 1994, a major overhaul of the stadium started, which was concluded only in 2000. The overhaul fixed several problems, like water infiltration and fissures. A new illumination system was installed, and the safety conditions were improved. The stadium’s maximum capacity was reduced to 80,000 people.

Events

The stadium has been host to many international shows, including: Nirvana, Michael Jackson, Madonna (who performed one show at the stadium in 1993 with The Girlie Show Tour, and three shows in 2008, closing the South American leg of her Sticky & Sweet Tour), Kiss, Aerosmith, Linkin Park, U2, RBD, High School Musical and Queen.
